Understanding Your Due Date

A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, or 280 days, from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). While this is the "standard" calculation, every woman and every pregnancy is unique.

Our calculator uses Naegele's Rule, the standard method used by healthcare providers. It assumes a 28-day menstrual cycle with ovulation occurring on day 14. If your cycle is shorter or longer, your actual due date might vary slightly.

Quick Tip

Only about 4-5% of babies are born exactly on their estimated due date. Most are born within a two-week window before or after.

While highly useful for planning, it's an estimate. An early ultrasound (dating scan) performed in the first trimester is generally considered the most accurate way to confirm your due date.

If you're unsure of your last period, your doctor will rely on an ultrasound to measure the embryo/fetus and determine the gestational age.

Yes. If your cycle is consistently longer than 28 days, you likely ovulated later, meaning your due date would be later than what a standard LMP calculation suggests.
